Gadget Guide
The ring, pegs, anchors & playhead modes
The Basics
- Gadget
- One sample player: a circular waveform (the Ring), a row of Pegs, a playhead mode, and effects. A project holds several gadgets, all locked to one flexible tempo.
- Ring
- Your sample wrapped into a circle. Everything you do on the ring is a drag — a “tap” is just a short one. Where you touch is where sound starts.
- Peg
- A stored trigger for the gadget: an anchor point on the ring plus a pattern (repeats, steps, timing). The selected peg is the Target Peg — the one the ring plays and edits. Selecting a peg snaps the ring to its anchor without making a sound.
- Anchor
- A peg’s stored position on the ring — the place its pattern plays from. A peg’s ▶ always means “play this peg from its anchor.”
Playhead Modes
The gadget’s mode decides what your taps and drags do. Pattern is the composed layer; Latch, Retrigger, and Hold are the freeform playhead layer — a second instrument that plays the same sample with its own voice, volume/pan, fades, and effects.
| Pattern | Latch | Retrigger | Hold | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touch down | Triggers the Target Peg’s pattern from the touch point | Starts a continuous playhead at the touch point | Starts a playhead at the touch point | Starts a playhead at the touch point |
| Drag | Re-triggers the pattern as you move | Re-fires as you move — a scrub | Re-fires as you move — a scrub | Ignored — the first touch point holds |
| Release | Pattern keeps going per its repeats | Keeps playing | Fades out | Fades out |
Scrubs re-fire on movement, not on raw touch events, and each re-fire chokes the previous snippet with a fast pop-free crossfade — scrub as hard as you like.
Stopping a latched playhead
- Target Peg’s ⏹ — stops the peg’s pattern and any playhead voices started while it was selected.
- Tap the Latch icon again — stops the sound, stays in Latch.
- Fire a new note — replaces the old one (crossfade), doesn’t silence.
- Leaving Latch mode does not stop it — the sound holds until your next ring touch (which also performs the new mode). Switching to Pattern while still holding down stops everything at once.
Anchor Set 📍
The pin toggle beside the mode indicator decides whether ring touches write the Target Peg’s anchor. It works in every mode, and only changes what’s remembered — never what you hear.
- Armed — touches set the anchor. In Pattern, taps place it; in the playhead modes, drag by ear and where you stop is the new anchor.
- Off — pure performance. Scrub freely, trigger patterns from anywhere on the ring — the stored anchor never moves, and ▶ still plays the peg from its anchor.
The Pegs Row
- ⌖ selects the Target Peg (ring lights while the peg is sounding).
- ▶ plays the peg’s pattern from its anchor. ⏹ stops the peg — pattern and its playhead voices.
- Arm dots above the cells add pegs to the group transport: the row’s Play fires every armed peg together, Pause stops them together. Play lights when any armed peg is stopped; Pause when any is playing.
Anchors Panel
- Tap a stored anchor to jump the ring there — and it performs in the current mode: in Pattern it triggers the pattern, in Latch it starts a playhead, and so on. Anchor Set applies as usual.
- Edit mode (✎): tap an empty slot to store the current ring position, tap a filled slot to overwrite it, long-press to clear.
- Anchor Sets (📁): save named collections of anchors per audio file. Load a file that has saved sets and klippklön offers them back — with the option to save your current collection first.
Signal Flow
Every peg has its own FX chain, heard on its pattern playback. The playhead layer has its own chain (and volume/pan and tempo-relative fades), set from the Modes page. Everything meets in the gadget chain.
pattern peg ─▶ peg FX ──────────┐ (each peg has its own) playhead layer ─▶ playhead FX ──┼─▶ gadget FX ─▶ pan/vol ─▶ out sample bank (dry) ──────────────┘
Fade-in and fade-out for the playhead modes are tempo-relative (set in beats on the Modes page) with pop-free minimums, so stops and retriggers stay clean at any setting — including zero.
